Hello and Welcome!

I am Belen, the owner and the webmaster behind your-cancer-prevention-guide.com.

I am not a medical professional.

In fact, my educational background consists of a college degree in Psychology and a Master's degree in Development Management. I am presently working in the government in the Philippines.

So, you may ask, why have I put up a site on a health issue such as cancer prevention?

Let me take you back to 2007...

In 2007, I met a cancer survivor.

He became a close friend of mine and my husband, Pj, and we call him Tito Eric.

Here is PJ with Tito Eric.

He told us about his difficult battle with cancer and his rewarding journey to healing his body. From Tito Eric, I learned about the inner doctor we all have inside us.

I realized cancer can be beaten.

In 2008, cancer became a personal issue.

  • A friend was diagnosed with breast cancer. The sadder part was she stayed away from all her friends and decided to deal with her condition on her own. (An Update: She is on remission right now.)

  • I saw how a co-worker's world crumbled when her mother was diagnosed of and died of lung cancer. Her mother wasn't even a smoker so she blamed her brother who does. She still blames him until today.

  • I saw the grief and the worry on a childhood friend's face when her mother was diagnosed with stomach cancer. Until today, her mother is still in the battle. She needs blood transfusion weekly and my husband gladly gives blood to her every 2 weeks.(An update: My friend's mother died last 2009.)

This is how the idea of a site focused on the prevention of the disease was born. And little did I know that it was only the beginning.

Connecting the dots...

I don't know if I attracted the disease to my personal life because of this site or I attracted the concept of prevention. The disease was about to make a heartbreaking impact in my life.

Last May when my SBI site was already up and running, my father was diagnosed with Stage 2 Lung Cancer. I couldn't believe the diagnosis at first because my father quit smoking almost 50 years ago. But the laboratory test results didn't lie. A tumor was found in his left lung.

My mother, my siblings and I cried. My father is already 81 years old. We couldn't imagine the pain he would have to go through because of the disease.

I can't bear seeing more loved ones hurt by cancer when it is largely preventable. Having read so much about it and how amazing the human body is, I thought it would be great to share everything I have learned.

By sharing, I hope to help you be in control. After all, it's your health. Your body. Your life.

This site has still a long way to go so do come back. I am glad you took the time to find out about me.

To your good health,

I Love SBI!
