Unexpected Weight Loss

Getting too thin lately? Sudden and unexpected weight loss is one of the first important symptoms of tumor. You may experience the symptom first before you can be diagnosed with the exact type. Unintentional weight loss can also be one of the signs of cancer.

sudden unintentional weight loss

Sometimes, when you drop a few pounds without trying or meaning to, it may be a pleasant surprise. But losing those kilos way too much is unhealthy and is a reason to go to a doctor.

What is considered "unhealthy weight loss"?

If you're not doing anything to make you lose those kilos but you still do at 10 lbs or more, then something is wrong. Getting too thin is a very important symptom your body is giving you.

What are other causes of unintentional weight loss?

Losing a lot of weight without intending to can be a result of the following:

  • Changes in your diet or activity level

  • Over-the-counter (OTC) medication you may be taking

  • Feelings of anxiety or depression

  • Poor absorption of nutrients by your body

  • Difficulty in chewing because of dental problems.

Unhealthy loss of body mass can also be attributed to some diseases such as diabetes or hyperthyroidism. But if you consistently lose weight with no reasonable explanation for it and you're not trying to shed some pounds off, then it can be a reason to be concerned with.

Unexpected loss of weight is usually a first symptom of a cancer. It happens almost always with these types of cancer -- pancreatic, stomach, esophageal and lung cancer.
